Whether you have just reserved a house renovation or are considering embarking on a single, what should you expect while working with a builder? To assist you to browse the process we have compiled a list of 8 items to remember during a house renovation.
1. You’ll Be the Talk of the Neighbourhood
Renovations draw a lot of attention. Speak with your neighbors about the degree of the renovation and the planned timeline. Don’t forget to give them a heads up if there’s something important happening, you do not need them to be amazed if an excavator shows up at 8 AM. 2. Bear in Mind That It’s a Process
The restoration process is simply that, a process. There’ll be times when you can’t contain your excitement like on demo day or any time your dream tub is set up. But there may also be boring days when progress seems slow. Ever see wiring being set up? It is kind of like watching paint dry!
3. Rethink Your Daily Routine
If you will be at home throughout the renovation, we could guarantee your daily routine is going to change. There’ll be sections of this house you may have limited access to, people coming and going during the day, frequently very early, and lots of additional sounds. You will need to be flexible with your routines (don’t forget to stretch first!). Consider what may need to shift so that work and family lives can carry on as normally as you can. And give a little extra thought to the tiniest members of their family…kids and pets! However, you’re going to want to make sure that for the most part they are kept safely out of their way.
4. You’ll Want to Shoot Photos

5. Find a Way to Stay Organized
While a fantastic contractor will take as much off your plate as possible, you will still have a lot of choices to make. To prevent anything from falling through the cracks we suggest keeping organized with a project journal. 6. Yes, There Will Be Mess!
Your home will be a building site. Regardless of the preventative measures, such as dust obstacles and floor covers, dirt will escape into other parts of the property (it is sneaky like that!).
Together with the excess foot vehicles and traffic, your lawn may also be subject to a bit of wear and tear, so be ready to demonstrate your home a little additional love during the reno, inside and out. 7. Everything You Should Expect From The Organization
Your contractor is going to be your new best friend over the course of your renovation therefore it’s important to choose wisely!
A great builder (& crew) would be:
- In constant communication (i.e. they’ll never ghost one)
- respectful to you, your family, and your house
- specialist (i.e. be on their Very Best behavior at all times)
- punctuation and show up on the agreed upon times

8. What Your Contractor Should Expect From You

- Individual, particularly now that some things may require longer
- decisive, which will help keep things moving across
- welcoming (i.e. make the team feel that you’re pleased to see them). A team that feels appreciated will frequently go the excess mile. Plus, you will be happier too!
