The IBM 2010 International CEO study revealed a very interesting and remarkable result that can change the world for the better.
A total of 1500 CEOs participate in the survey from 60 countries in 33 industries globally. The survey showed that less than half of the executives surveyed felt that they or their enterprises can successfully handle the growing complexity caused by the changes in global economic power centers, hastened sector transformation, growing volumes of information, and quickly evolving customer tastes.
The CEOs appear to believe more than rigor, management field, ethics, or even visions are needed to equip them and their enterprises because of this growing sophistication. The only skill that could navigate the business within an ever-increasing complex world and business is CREATIVITY and this has been identified as the number one leadership proficiency now and in the future.
The survey is a vital proof that the planet is entering a new era where creativity is becoming more and more important. This finding also suggests that there is a need to discover innovative strategies to manage an organization’s structure, financing, individuals, and strategy and that older business models cannot offer all the solutions a business needs to stay competitive, profitable, and sustainable. A challenge nonetheless exists…
The challenge is the attitude, dread, and perceptions people have towards the imagination. Folks associate creativity with a particular personality or genius of a person, others view it as a specific thinking style (correct brain directed thinking) and a few see it that people are just born artistic. So, defining and understanding of originality could be problematic. The concept that creativity is a predetermined personality trait appeals at a mental level since it gives people an excuse for not innovating or initiating change themselves, reducing the problem of ingenuity to a recruitment challenge. This makes creativity in business a scarce commodity. But this can no longer be approved.
So what can business leaders do now?

The link between creativity and innovation
In literature, various definitions exist to explain the terms of creativity and innovation. For this article, creativity can be defined as a psychological and social process between the discovery of new associations of ideas or concepts that are fuelled by the practice of either conscious or unconscious insight.
Three items are needed for creativity:
Resources – understanding, experience, and access to information.
Creative thinking – a person’s capacity to think beyond the box and put present ideas together in new combinations.
Internal motivation – inspiration from inside; an individual’s personal needs and fire to be creative.
There are three very important aspects to be aware of:
Creativity discards preconceived assumptions.
A Creative person tries a new approach or method which may seem unthinkable to other people.
Creativity requires divergent thinking (generating many unique ideas) and convergent thinking (mixing those notions into the best result). Creativity is not a right-brain directed thinking strategy however a whole-brain strategy.
In business, imagination is required for innovation. Construction is the process of generating and implementing creative thoughts in some specific context. In other words, innovation involves the addition of something new and valuable – an artifact or a method – into a functioning production, marketing, or management system.
Three variables specify a company’s strengths and flaws of the creation process, namely:
Exactly what a company has (the importance of resources),
How a company does its function (the importance of procedures ), and
What a company wants to perform (the firms’ worth ).
It is important to note that there are two phases in the process of innovation, namely:
An invention that consists of idea generation, idea analysis and opportunity recognition (imagination ), and
Exploitation consists of growth and commercialization (innovation).
Innovation is connected with behaviors, activities, and personalities of those people, or celebrities, engaged in the creation and manipulation steps.
Implementing innovation and creativity in the workplace
Creativity is the basis for disruptive innovation and continuous reinvention required in the volatile, uncertain, and complex business environment and starts with”creative thinking” leadership. Business leaders will need to encourage other people to drop outdated strategies and take balanced dangers. They will need to embrace ambiguity by exemplifying breakthrough thinking. Business leaders need to lead and interact in entirely new ways, decreasing long-held beliefs and business models when required, challenging the status quo, be distinct and radical and search for answers which won’t become tomorrow’s problems.
Business leaders may need to nurture cultures of authentic creativity and invention. This can be accomplished by ensuring that organizations meet people’s core demands, namely physical needs, emotional needs, mental demands, and spiritual needs according to Schwartz (2010:1). This is the key to creativity. The more people are preoccupied with unmet demands; the less energy they’ll bring to their job and the less creative they will be.
Creativity could be taught and business leaders must put in the effort to teach creativity systematically to workers. Business leaders may use a six-step strategy to teach their workers to be creative and innovative. These six steps are a blend of Plsek’s Directed Creativity Cycle created in 1992 and Luecke and Katz’s Innovation model of 2003 (Cropley 2008:271). The first four steps involve creativity and also the last two steps involve innovation.
Step 1: Preparation and activation
In this step, workers observe and gather data, problem awareness develops and investigation takes place.
Step 2: Imagination and generation
Here a range of possible options are generated
Measure 3: Development and Illumination
One or more promising, innovative solutions are harvested and improved
Step 4: Action and verification
Evaluate and analyze so that one solution can be developed

The product is shown to educated others
Step 6: Validation
The item is launched/ implemented in the marketplace. The Business has to live with it before improvements can be made
Business leaders must encourage employees to express their own specific abilities and nurture their fire by putting employees in jobs that excite their creativity (Schwartz, 2010:1-2). Business leaders must ensure that employees understand that their work thing because human-beings are meaning-making creatures. Creative thinking is triggered when people know that their contributions and work make a difference.
Creative thinking requires time and business leaders need to provide uninterrupted time, free of pressure to get instant responses and instant answers to encourage the creative idea. The best way to encourage innovation is to schedule”special time-out sessions” frequently. Employees also need time to recuperate and be renewed and can’t operate continuously. They have to have the ability to step away from the issue to allow the unconscious mind to operate and meditate and only then can creative breakthroughs occur (Schwartz, 2010:1-2).
Business leaders can either enhance creative thinking and innovation in their organizations or crush creativity (Sloane, 2003:1-2). The business leaders Will Need to prevent:
